NetworkManager - OpenSuse 11.2 - kein WLAN [gelöst]

Ich bin gerade von 11.1 auf 11.2 umgestiegen, und habe dabei erstmals mit dem NetworkManager zu.
Ich sehe meinen Router/WLAN-Basisstation und deren Signalstärke.
Aber ich bekomme keine Verbindung hin.
(Ist ein Notbook. WLAN-Verbindung unter Windows läuft schon immer ohne Probleme.)
Ich war davon ausgegangen, dass ich angeben muss:
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS Server: 192.168.2.1

Diese Eingaben finde ich im NetworkManager aber nicht alle. Dafür wird Anderes angefordert, zu dem ich aber keine Erläuterung gefunden habe.

(Verschlüsselung ist WPA2/PSK; Passphrase habe ich natürlich angegeben.)

Es kommt keine Verbindung zustande; es gibt aber auch keinerlei Fehlermeldung oder (für mich erkennbare) Analysemöglichkeit.

Weiterhin irritiert mich:
Die Benutzeroberfläche "KNetworkManager" läuft nur unter root & wenn niemand sonst schon eingeloggt ist.
Ist schon jemand eingeloggt, kommt die Fehlermeldung "NetworkManager läuft schon."

Gibt es irgendwo eine Schnellanleitung für NetworkManager? (Ich habe viel Text gefunden, der mir aber nichts geholfen hat.)
Gibt es eine Analysemöglichkeit, mit der ich zielgerichtet nach der Problemursache suchen kann?

Das hat ein Stück geholfen, aber nur für 'root':

1. Framp's Script hat mich informiert, dass es noch YAST-Einstellungen gibt, die den NetworkManager behindern. Nachdem ich mich getraut habe, diese für LAN und WLAN zu löschen, funktionierte das WLAN unter root. (LAN natürlich auch.)

Aber:
2.1 Loggt man sich dann als User ein, funktionieren zwar LAN und WLAN noch, aber man kann KNetworkManager nicht starten.
2.2 Loggt man sich nach Neustart gleich als User ein, geht kein WLAN (ob LAN geht, weiss ich nicht). (KNetworkManager kann man dann auch nicht starten.)

3. CollectNWData liefert weiterhin Fehlermeldungen:
3.1 Unter der SSID meines WLAN-Routers (ueber den zu diesem Zeitpunkt gerade die Verbindung lief) fand CollectNWData nichts (s. Anlage).
3.2 Auch bei der Analyse des LAN-Anschlusses (der zu diesem Zeitpunkt aber nicht aktiv war, d.h. kein Kabel gesteckt) gibt es Fehlermeldungen. (U.a. ipv6, das ich in YAST abgeschaltet hatte, weil ich einen Hinweis fand, dass mein Router - Netgear Wireless-N 300 - das nicht kann.)

Wenn ein Netzwerkkabel gesteckt ist, funktioniert die Netzwerkverbindung natuerlich. Meine Fragen bzgl. des Outputs von CollectNWData sind daher diesbezueglich eher von akademischem Interesse.

Meine Probleme mit wireless lassen sich auf die Fragen reduzieren:
Ich habe einen Weg gefunden, wireless Verbindungen herzustellen:
1. Als root mit KNetworkManager die Verbindung herstellen.
2. Dann als user einloggen (root dabei aber eingeloggt lassen).
Wenn das er einzige (und richtige) Weg ist, dann mache ich das eben so.

(Ich hatte angenommen, dass das nicht der Standardablauf, sondern dass bei meiner NetworkManager-Installation oder -Benutzung irgendetwas nicht stimmt.)
 
Weil mein jetziger Ablauf zwar funktioniert, aber doch etwas umständlich ist, würde ich mich über eine Antwort freuen.
(Ich nutze mittlerweile 11.3)

Ablauf:
  • Einloggen als root.
  • Warten bis WLAN-Verbindung aufgebaut.
  • Wechsel zu User.

Dahinter stehen die Annahmen:
  • Networkmanager ist nur unter root konfigurierbar, d.h. Eingabe von WLAN-routern, password/encryption-key.
  • Networkmanager nimmt seine Arbeit (d.h. Verbinden, ...) auch nur unter root auf.

Beides falsch.
Der User kann natürlich verfügbare WLANs finden und sich einloggen, genauso wie ein User das passende Passwort eingeben kann. Dazu muss natürlich der NetworkManager auch in der Usersession laufen.
In der Regel funktioniert das auch problemlos.

Wie in den meisten Fällen, waren es banale Ursachen:
  • Falsches Verständnis von Zusammenhängen.
  • NetworkManager versuchte auf KWallet zugreifen, was gar nicht in Betrieb genommen war.
  • CollectNWData zeigte, dass DHCP nicht funktionierte.
  • Ich wusste nicht, dass man sich zum Testen neuer Einstellungen jedesmal aus- und einloggen muss.
  • ...
